Hidden America: From Coal Miners to Cowboys, an...

Five hundred feet underground, Jeanne Marie Laskas asked a coal miner named Smitty, “Do you think it’s weird that people know so little about you?” He replied, “I don’t think people know too much about the way the whole damn country works.” Hidden America intends to fix that. Like John McPhee and Susan Orlean, Laskas dives deep into her subjects and emerges with character-driven narratives that are gripping, funny, and revelatory. In Hidden America, the stories are about the people who make our lives run every day—and yet we barely think of them. Laskas spent weeks in an Ohio coal mine and on an Alaskan oil rig; in a Maine migrant labor camp, a Texas beef ranch, the air traffic control tower at New York’s LaGuardia Airport,a California landfill, an Arizona gun shop, the cab of a long-haul truck in Iowa, and the stadium of the Cincinnati Ben-Gals cheerleaders. Cheerleaders? Yes. They, too, are part of hidden America, and you will be amazed by what Laskas tells you about them: hidden no longer. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jamie Heinlein. Country music grew up in the mountains of Appalachia, in the cotton fields of Georgia and Mississippi, the car and truck plants in Detroit, and in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. It was - and is - the music of the people. Hairl Hensley tells of Jimmy Rodgers and the Carter Family; of Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb, whose music played in honky tonks...and Roy Acuff , whose music was heard in Madison Square Garden; of the Girls of the Golden West, but also of Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. It all started on June 14, 1923, when Fiddlin’ John Carson played “The Old Hen Cackled".... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Hairl Hensley. Acclaimed New York Times best-selling author Jennifer Haigh returns to the Pennsylvania town at the center of her iconic novel Baker Towers in this ambitious, achingly human story of modern America and the conflicting forces at its heart - a bold, moving drama of hope and desperation, greed and power, big business and small-town families. Forty years ago, Bakerton coal fueled the country. Then the mines closed, and the town wore away like a bar of soap. Now Bakerton has been granted a surprise third act: It sits squarely atop the Marcellus Shale, a massive deposit of natural gas. To drill or not to drill? Prison guard Rich Devlin leases his mineral rights to finance his dream of farming. He doesn't count on the truck traffic and nonstop noise, his brother's skepticism, or the paranoia of his wife, Shelby, who insists the water smells strange and is poisoning their frail daughter. Meanwhile his neighbors, organic dairy farmers Mack and Rena, hold out against the drilling - until a passionate environmental activist disrupts their lives. Told through a cast of characters whose lives are increasingly bound by the opposing interests that underpin the national debate, Heat and Light depicts a community blessed and cursed by its natural resources. Soaring and ambitious, it zooms from drill rig to shareholders' meeting to the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor to the ruined landscape of the "strippins", haunting reminders of Pennsylvania's past energy booms. This is a dispatch from a forgotten America - a work of searing moral clarity from one of the finest writers of her generation, a courageous and necessary book. 1. Language: English. Joseph Tiritilli, aka Joey Jet, exemplifies the success possible in America today by using ambition, a willingness to take risks, and a strong work ethic to make the most of available opportunities. Joey Jet came up the hard way in Totowa, New Jersey, 15 miles from Manhattan, the heart of New York City. His grandfather was a blacksmith in a Pennsylvania coal mine, his father an honest, hardworking truck driver, and his mother a professional switchboard operator. Joey left school at 16. He became a three-time small business owner/operator, soloed at Lincoln Park, New Jersey, N07, and became a private pilot by age 25. Moving to Deerfield Beach, Florida, Joey Jet continued learning to fly at Pompano Beach Airpark's Pompano Air Center, earning his commercial airplane license and becoming a certified flight instructor under the tutelage of R. Dan Baker. Joey learned to fly Learjets when he was hired by Harvey N. Hop at Fort Lauderdale's Hop-A-Jet, Inc. Joey Jet has been a Learjet captain, flying the rich and famous throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean for more than 25 years. Fasten your seatbelt and enjoy this compilation of stories from some of Joey Jet's most memorable flights. Stories include James Patterson, Roger King, a Puff Daddy imposter, James Lovell, Billy Joel, Enrique, Paris Hilton, Suze Orman, John Schnatter of Papa John's Pizza, Jackie Mason, Denzel Washington, Paulina Porizkova, Diana Ross, Shakira, Henryk de Kwiatkowski, Lee Greenwood, Elie Wiesel, Preston Henn, Patrick Park, Robert Redford, Don Whittington, Dear Abby, General H. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. There was only one member of Class S2, No.110. It was an extensive rebuild by the NCC of a BNCR Class S 2-4-2T Worsdell-von Borries two-cylinder compound locomotive that had been built in 1892. It had outside cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear with the smaller diameter high-pressure cylinder on the left and the larger low-pressure one on the right. During rebuilding in 1931, a modified standard gauge G6S boiler was installed, this was 7ft longer and 6 in greater in diameter than the original and had a working pressure of 200psi. To accommodate this, the overall length of the locomotive was increased by slightly less than four feet. The trailing radial truck was replaced by four-wheel bogie and a rear bunker was fitted which held one and a half tons of coal. The weight was increased by 10 tons.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Class S1 was a class of two locomotives that were rebuilt by the LMS (NCC) from BNCR Class S Worsdell-von Borries two-cylinder compound locomotives. They had outside cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear with the smaller diameter high-pressure cylinder on the left and the larger low-pressure one on the right. The rebuilding was carried out to increase the coal capacity by fitting a bunker behind the cab. This was accommodated by increasing the length of the radial truck, the wheelbase and overall length of the locomotives by two feet. On the modified engines the coal capacity was nominally unaltered at one long ton but the bunker enabled their footplates to be kept free from coal and improved working conditions in the rather cramped cabs. The weight was increased by 1 long ton 3 cwt (2,600 lb/1.2 t).
